Virtual Assistant Working Hours: Does the Philippines Time Zone Limit Yours?

virtual assistant working

It comes up on almost every first call, usually phrased as a worry: if they are in Manila, are they even awake when I need them?

No. Virtual assistant working hours are set by you, not by the map. You choose the window and the assistant is staffed to it, whether that is your standard hours, an early start, a late finish, weekends, or cover built around a seasonal peak. Manila is four hours ahead of Dubai, and that gap decides nothing about when you get support.

Two things do deserve your attention, and most people never reach them because they are still stuck on the clock: choosing the right window rather than the one you assume you need, and the holiday calendar, which really does not line up.

What is the time difference between the Philippines and the UAE?

The Philippines is four hours ahead of the UAE. Manila runs on UTC+8, Dubai and Abu Dhabi on UTC+4.

The detail worth more than the number is that neither country observes daylight saving. The gap is four hours in January and four hours in July, permanently. Anyone who has managed a team across London or New York knows the twice-yearly scramble when one side shifts and the other does not. That does not happen here, so whatever you agree in week one still holds in year three.

Do the working weeks line up?

Mostly, and more than they used to.

The Philippines works Monday to Friday with a Saturday and Sunday weekend. Since the UAE moved its government sector to a Monday to Friday week in January 2022, most of the UAE private sector has aligned the same way.

Two things are worth stating rather than assuming. The private sector was never compelled to switch, so the Monday to Friday week is typical rather than mandatory. And some free zone companies still run a Friday and Saturday weekend, or treat Friday as a half day.

If your week is not the standard one, say so at scoping and the assistant is set up to it. Before 2022 this caused real problems: a UAE business on Sunday to Thursday and an assistant on Monday to Friday lost two working days a week to the mismatch.

Which window do you actually need?

Virtual assistant working hours are worth real thought, and most businesses settle them by reflex. They ask for full nine-to-six coverage because it sounds like the safe default, then find half of it going unused.

Work backwards from what the role is for.

What the role is forOverlap you actually needWhat that usually looks like
Live customer enquiries, calls, bookingsYour full customer-facing dayMatched to your opening hours, whatever they are
Executive and calendar supportThe hours the person supported actually worksBuilt around one person, not the business
Reporting, data, research, bookkeepingTwo to four hours for questions and handoverWork lands on your desk before you open the laptop
Peak season, extended or out-of-hours coverBeyond your own team’s hoursSet deliberately for evenings, weekends or a seasonal run

The third row is the one people miss. If the work is productive rather than reactive, you need far less live overlap than instinct suggests, and the time difference starts working in your favour: the assistant’s day finishes as yours begins, so the reporting is already done when you sit down.

A useful test is to ask how many hours a day genuinely require both of you awake at the same moment. The answer is usually two to four, rather than a full eight.

What about public holidays?

This is the part that catches people out, and unlike the time zone it is a real planning item.

The Philippines has more public holidays than the UAE, and most fall on different dates. For 2026, Proclamation No. 1006 declared ten regular holidays and eight special non-working days, with Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha proclaimed separately once dates are confirmed against the Islamic calendar.

The clusters that matter most are the ones landing while UAE businesses are fully operational:

  • Holy Week, with Maundy Thursday and Good Friday on 2 and 3 April 2026, and Black Saturday following.
  • All Saints’ and All Souls’ on 1 and 2 November, a heavy travel period in the Philippines, so expect more than a single day of absence.
  • The Christmas to New Year run, where Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Rizal Day and the last day of the year all fall inside eight days.
  • Chinese New Year on 17 February 2026.
  • Araw ng Kagitingan (9 April), Labour Day (1 May), Independence Day (12 June), Ninoy Aquino Day (21 August), National Heroes Day (31 August), Bonifacio Day (30 November) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December).

There is common ground too. Both countries observe Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, so those tend to be quiet on both sides at once.

Two things make this manageable. The dates are published a year ahead by presidential proclamation, so none of it is a surprise if someone looks. And cover around the clusters that matter to your business can be planned in advance, which is considerably harder to arrange with an independent freelancer who simply goes offline on the day.

What you should not do is assume the Philippine calendar matches yours. December in particular is a full working month for most UAE businesses and a heavily interrupted one in Manila.

What changes during Ramadan?

For staff employed inside the UAE, working hours are reduced during Ramadan under UAE labour law.

An assistant working remotely from the Philippines is not employed under UAE labour law, so that reduction does not apply automatically. In practice your UAE-based team may be on shortened hours while your remote cover is not, which is useful for continuity and occasionally awkward if nobody has discussed it.

Decide it deliberately. Some businesses mirror the reduced hours across the whole team for fairness. Others keep remote coverage at full hours precisely because the office is on reduced ones. Either is defensible. The version that causes resentment is choosing by accident.

Virtual assistant working hours: what to agree before the start

None of this is difficult. It is just better written down than assumed:

  • The working window, stated in your own time zone. “9:00am to 6:00pm Dubai” is unambiguous. “UAE business hours” is not, and the gap between those two phrasings causes more early friction than anything else on this list.
  • Which week you actually work, including a half-day Friday or a Friday and Saturday weekend.
  • Whose holiday calendar applies, and what cover looks like during the Philippine clusters above.
  • Response-time expectations. “Within the hour during the working window, next working morning otherwise” beats “responsive”.
  • What counts as urgent, and how you reach them if it is. “Nothing is ever that urgent” is a perfectly good answer, as long as you say it out loud.
  • Ramadan hours, decided in advance.

If you have not hired yet, this belongs in the brief alongside the steps in how to hire a virtual assistant in Dubai.

Where DesertVA fits

You tell us the window and we staff it. Assistants supporting UAE businesses align to Gulf Standard Time and your working week, including client-specific start times, and we arrange cover outside standard hours at scoping rather than leaving it to chance. The same questions are answered on our FAQ page.

The difference between a managed arrangement and a freelance one shows up here more than anywhere. Hours, holiday cover and escalation are agreed up front and tracked, instead of being renegotiated by message every time a date clashes or someone goes quiet. For customer support that usually means building the window around your enquiry peaks. For executive support, around when the person being supported actually works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Manila and Dubai? Four hours, with Manila ahead. Manila is UTC+8, Dubai is UTC+4, and neither country observes daylight saving, so the difference holds all year.

Can a Philippines-based assistant work UAE business hours? Yes. You specify the window, whether that is standard UAE hours, an earlier start, a later finish or weekend cover, and the assistant is staffed to it. The Philippine time zone does not restrict when you get support.

Do the UAE and the Philippines share the same weekend? Usually. The Philippines takes Saturday and Sunday, and most of the UAE private sector moved to the same weekend after the government sector changed in January 2022. It was never mandatory for private companies, and some free zone businesses still run a Friday and Saturday weekend, so confirm yours rather than assuming.

How many public holidays do Philippine assistants take? For 2026 the government declared ten regular holidays and eight special non-working days, with the two Eid holidays proclaimed separately. Most fall on different dates from UAE holidays, with the heaviest clusters around Holy Week in early April, All Saints’ at the start of November, and Christmas Eve through New Year.

Do remote assistants get reduced Ramadan hours? Not automatically. The reduction under UAE labour law applies to employment inside the UAE, and an assistant working remotely from the Philippines is not covered by it. Agree in advance whether you want their hours to mirror your UAE team’s.
